                Chinese scholars developing new catalysts are expected to significantly reduce hydrogen energy costs

                As a new generation of clean energy, hydrogen has the advantages of pollution-free, high combustion value, and extensive resources. The most common production method is to generate oxygen through water cracking, which in turn forms hydrogen. This process requires catalysts to accelerate reaction efficiency. The traditional catalyst is a precious metal iridium based material, which is expensive, while previous research results often have low overall catalytic efficiency and instability.



                The research team used biomimetic methods to simulate the atomic structure of chloroplasts and developed a new type of catalyst with a special structure. This catalyst can reduce the preparation cost by more than 80%, reduce the energy driving the reaction by 5%, and has the potential for industrial grade electrolysis of water to produce hydrogen.



                The research team further attempted to selectively deposit electrocatalysts on the surface of iron oxide electrodes, simulate photosynthesis, and use solar energy to drive water splitting for hydrogen production. The process of preparing hydrogen from water splitting can meet the demand for high-density energy in the new generation of energy vehicles, and also provide new ideas for the development of new fuel cells with metal as the negative electrode and oxygen in the air as the positive electrode.
